Dragons Tale

The fourth grade has been studying plural nouns, singular and plural possessive nouns.  They were asked to create a dragon.  Then they were to write a paragraph describing their dragon and telling what its life is like since most people are frightened by dragons.  In the paragraph they were to use the singular possessive form of dragon.   Look below to see their dragons and come by the fourth grade hall to see them and the paragraphs.

August 31, 2012

To help the students understand our reading story for this week "Election Day" and the upcoming presidential election, the students nominated eleven classmates to be candidates for class librarians.
Six students will be elected next Friday, September 7th for this job.  The candidates will campaign Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week.  Candidates may make posters, campaign buttons, etc. to be displayed in the fourth grade room and hallway.  They will give their final speeches on Friday afternoon with the election to follow the last speech.
Each student elected will serve as class librarian for a six week period.  Their main duties will be to check out books from our class library and make sure they are all returned.
Please check the blog next week for pictures.

The fourth grade will begin A-Math next week.   Look for their work in their Tuesday folders September 4th.

Our memory verse next week is I Corinthians 13: 4 and 5

4.  Love is patient, love is kind.  Love does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Dear Parents,

It is good to be back.  I think everyone is glad to get back into a regular routine.  We have begun learning about subjects and predicates in language.  Last year in social studies we learned about communities.  How they are alike and different.  This year in social studies we will be learning about the regions of the United States.  How they are alike and different.  The fourth grade will begin their studies in RSVP this week.

I am not very good at blogging but will try to update each week or two.

April 16, 2012

Dear Parents,
The DSU students will be teaching all day on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  I will NOT be recording any of the grades from activities or papers that the students do for the DSU teachers.

There will be no spelling practice test on Wednesday.  I have decided not to have any definitions on Friday's spelling test.  They will just have to spell the words and do the dictation test.

The students have a test study guide in their binders for Friday's Mississippi History test on Chapter 3.  I will NOT be taking sentences from the study guides we have done in class.  However, many of the test answers can be found on those study guides.

Thank you,
Janice Roberts

March 30

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for a wonderful trip to the state capitol last week.  A special thank you to all who drove.  The children had a wonderful time and I think they learned a lot.  We truly have a beautiful capitol building and a rich history.  I hope to have pictures posted soon.

The entire class worked very hard on the achievement tests this week.  If their scores reflect how hard they worked they should do well.

Next week is Holy Week.  We will have chapel each morning.  The fourth graders will be singing with the third grade during chapel on Wednesday.  I hope you can come to hear them.

March 9, 2012

Dear Parents,

Today begins spring break.  I  pray that each of you have a safe and restful holiday.

As you know we added a new student to our class.  HER name is Zoie.  I am sure after a week with us you have hear her name.  SO we now have 14 girls and 1 boy.

Our Jackson trip is set for Friday, March 23rd.  Be looking for a letter Monday, March 19 about riding assignments.  Each parent is riding in the same car as their child. The students do NOT need any money for the trip except their spending money at the gift shop.  (10 or 15 dollars)  Only adults that are not driving will need $6.00 for the museum.  Please send the $6.00 by Tuesday, March 20th.

I also want to remind you that the first part of the Mississippi Notebook project is due on Tuesday, March 20th.  A grade will be given each time the notebook is checked.    I have attached a copy of the guidelines and time line in the project page.

February 24, 2012

Dear Parents,

The fourth grade is now studying Mississippi History.  Students will read the lessons and complete a "Study Guide" for that lesson.  The chapter tests will come from those study guides.  I will use the same information on the guide but may change the omitted word or words.  The students will also have vocabulary words for each chapter and a test on that vocabulary.  Students  will get their information about the Mississippi Notebook projects March 5th.

Since we will be going to the capital building on the 23rd of March I will have to skip to the government chapter out of sequence.   Before we go to Jackson students need to know who are our state representatives and congressman.  They also need to know some of the history and symbolism connected with the capital building itself.

February 17, 2012

Dear Parents,
I have begun working on the fourth grade trip to the state capital building in Jackson.  This is an all day trip.  We are scheduled for March 23rd and our tour of the building begins at 10 o'clock.  We will need at least 5 drivers for the trip.  I hope this gives you enough time to rearrange our schedules.
Right now that is all I know for sure.

January 20, 2012

Dear Parents,

Wednesday, January 25th is the Science Fair.  The gym will be open Tuesday afternoon so you can set up their projects early.  I will check the gym before I leave and give the students that have set up early an bonus 100 grade in social studies. Those who set up on Wednesday morning need to do so before 8:00.  I will not let any of the students leave the room after 8 o'clock because they will be taking their math test before they go to the science fair.   After the science fair students will finish the math test and take the spelling practice test.  The remainder of the afternoon will be play practice.

So far most of the students know their lines but really need to work on the action that goes with each part.    We have most of the props that we need for the play already in the classroom.  We do need a few smaller size pillows, and everyone except the doctors will need a SMALL suitcase or travel bag.  We will keep these in the classroom prop box.  We will have dress rehearsal Wednesday (1:00 to 2:50) in the gym with Mrs. Jackson.

Most of the students will need to wear a PDS t-shirt, a nice pair of jeans (with a belt).  The doctors will wear jeans (with a belt) and a plain shirt of some sort.  We will have white lab. coats for the doctors.

Until after the play Friday morning we will do what I have in the REN Web lesson plans on what ever day and time that we can.  Friday after the play should be back on the normal schedule.

January 31st is the spelling bee in the Chapel.

January 13, 2012

Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday, January 16th.  It is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I also wanted to let everyone know that on Tuesday the fourth grade will begin practicing for the play on January 27.  We are using our reading time for these practices.  So this six week will will be shorter on the number of grades than what I normally have.  Please let your children know how important it is to do well on what we will be grading.  We will not have time to redo papers.

January 3, 2012

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!!!!   I hope your Christmas holidays were a great as mine.

Just a few reminders for this month.

January 27th the fourth grade will be presenting their play during chapel.  Mrs. Jackson and I are in the final stages of assigning parts.  Your child should have this by Friday.

January 31st the students will be going to Indywood to sing.  We will need drivers for that morning.

In reading class we have begun a new book titled  "Survival Flood."  This is a story about the 1927 flood.  If any of you have photographs or know of an exhibit of the 1927 flood please let me know so we can share this with all the students.

Due to the Christmas holidays report cards and Tuesday folders will be coming home Thursday.
